Discord is definitely one of the best apps for voice communication available today. Thanks to super-optimized sound compression, it’s able to provide an uninterrupted, high-quality voice chat even when streaming resource-heavy video games.

Discord works via virtual servers, which route the communication directly between the chat participants. Although it might sound complex, it’s actually pretty easy to set up your own Discord server. Regardless of the platform you might be using, this article will explain the process, step by step.

How to Make a Discord Server

Making a Discord server is almost the same for all popular platforms. You can use it on a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, as well as on iOS or Android mobile devices. What’s more, you can even use it through an Internet browser by accessing the Discord web app.

The process usually involves the following steps:

  1. Installing the Discord app.
  2. Creating your Discord account.
  3. Logging into Discord.
  4. Creating your server.
Of course, certain steps will differ slightly from platform to platform, so the next few sections will delve deeper into what each platform requires.

How to Make a Discord Server on Windows and Mac

To use Discord on a Windows or Mac computer, you can either use its web app via a browser or download and install the desktop app. Once you setup Discord, the process of making your first server will be the same, regardless of the app version you’re using.

To create a Discord server using the web app, follow these steps:

  1. Visit
  2. Click “Open Discord in your browser” in the main portion of the screen. If that button isn’t available, you can click “Login” on the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Enter your username and click the button with the arrow pointing to the right.
  4. Now, you’ll probably have to solve a reCAPTCHA “I’m not a robot” challenge. Once you successfully pass the test, you’ll enter the Discord app.
  5. Select your date of birth and click “Next.”
  6. The next screen allows you to either create your server from scratch or use one of the common templates, like Gaming, Friends, etc. For the sake of this tutorial, choose “Create My Own.”
  7. Now, you can define whether this server will be for your personal use or for a club or community. For now, select “For me and my friends.”
  8. The next screen allows you to customize your server. You can upload an image to use for your server, as well as define the server’s name. Once you’re done, click “Create.”
  9. As the final step, you can define the topic for your server. Of course, there’s a “Skip” button if you don’t want to do this now.
  10. Once that’s done, you’ll see the “Your server is ready!” notification. Click the “Take me to my server!” button to proceed.
  11. Finally, Discord allows you to claim the server you’ve just made. To do so, you’ll have to create a Discord account by entering your e-mail address and a password.
As you can see, it’s possible to create a server without even creating a Discord account. Of course, if you plan on using it in the future, it’s best to claim your server and keep all the settings you’ve just made.

If you want to use the Discord desktop app, the process is slightly different from the one explained above:

  1. Visit
  2. Click the “Download for …” button in the main portion of the screen. Depending on your operating system, the website will adjust the wording for this button. For example, if you’re using Windows, it will read “Download for Windows.”
  3. The app’s setup file should start downloading now, so wait until it finishes. Since the app is fairly small (around 65 MB), it should take no more than a minute for it to download.
  4. Once the app’s setup file has completed the download, go to your Downloads folder and double-click the file to start the setup.
  5. Now, the setup will download the most recent updates and open the app once it’s done.
  6. You should see the “Welcome back!” screen now. If you don’t have a Discord account just yet, click “Register” beneath the “Login” button.
  7. Now, enter your e-mail, username, password, and date of birth. Once you’re done, click “Continue.”
  8. After this, the app’s home page will appear, allowing you to start using Discord.
  9. Before you proceed, make sure to verify your e-mail address with Discord:
    1. Open the mailbox for the e-mail address you’ve used to register with Discord.
    2. Find the mail from Discord with the subject “Verify Email Address for Discord” and open it.
    3. Click the “Verify Email” button.
    4. A new browser tab will open, saying “Email Verified!”
    5. Click “Continue to Discord.”
    6. This action will automatically open the Discord web app. Once it does, you’ll probably see the “Open Discord?” notification. Click “Open Discord” to get back to the app. Of course, you can also close this tab and get back to the app by yourself. Just click the app’s icon in the taskbar.
  10. Once you return to the Discord desktop app, you’ll notice a yellow exclamation mark in the menu to the far left. It hovers over the “Create a Server” button. Click it.
  11. Now follow the process as explained in steps 6 to 9 from the previous section. This will take you to your new server.

For anyone using a Chromebook, there are two ways to create a Discord server:

  1. Use the Chrome browser to navigate to the Discord web app. This process is explained in the first portion of the “How to Make a Discord Server on Windows and Mac” section of this article.
  2. Install the Android app from Google Play. To do this, follow the steps explained in the “How to Make a Discord Server on Android” section above.

How to Make a Discord Server Public

Discord servers are as public as you want them to be. At the start, no one can join your server unless you or someone else has invited them by sharing the server’s link. If you post your Discord server’s link publicly on a website or anywhere on social media, it will have a public perception.

However, if you want to create a truly public server which anyone can access without using a link, then you’ll have to enable the “Community” option. Be aware that it will take some time before your server actually becomes public as Discord has strict guidelines you’ll have to fulfill first.

  1. Right-click on your server’s icon from the menu on the left.
  2. Click “Server Settings.”
  3. Click the “Enable Community” option from the menu on the left.
  4. Click “Get Started” from the main screen.
  5. Now, Discord will expand the set of features on your server, allowing you to reach a wider audience.
  6. To become publicly visible, click “Discovery” in the “Community” section.
  7. In the main window, you’ll see the “Enable Discovery” button, but it will be grayed out.
  8. In order to make your server public, you’ll have to fulfill all the requirements listed below the “Enable Discovery” button.

How to Make a Discord Server Private

Making a Discord server private is pretty easy.

  1. Right-click your server’s icon.
  2. Click “Server Settings.”
  3. Click “Roles” from the menu on the left.
  4. Click the “@everyone” role from the main screen.
  5. Now, scroll down the page and uncheck each option in the permissions list.
This way, only the people you personally add to the server will have access. If you want, you can also further tweak their access permissions by assigning them to a new rule you can create.
